Top Ten Tuesday: Series to Start

Today's Top 10 Tuesday from The Broke and the Bookish is perfect timing! Joining the book blogging world beyond Goodreads has introduced me to so many new obsessions in the blogosphere, usually in the form of favorite or beloved book series. Since I joined the 2013 Series Catch-Up challenge this year, I've been even more motivated to knock some of these off of my TBR list!

My Top Ten Series I'd Like to Start:

1. The Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire) series by George R.R. Martin

I've loved watching Game of Thrones on HBO because it's so beautiful, but I bet the storyline is far better in this wildly popular series.

2. The Stephanie Perkins "trilogy"

Sometimes I think I'm the only person in the entire book blogging world who hasn't read these beloved books. I have to say the new covers just make me want to pick them up even more now!

3. The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater

I've seen these on shelves and in hands forever, but for the longest time thought they looked like a yet another Twilight ripoff, but I'd like to make my own mind up.

4. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series by Laini Taylor

People absolutely rave about Laini Taylor's writing and if there's one thing I love more than just good storytelling, it's great writing. This is definitely at the top of my "to-read" series list and will probably be one of the first ones I pick up this year

5. The Uglies series by Scott Westerfield

These have been out so long they're almost a "classic" but I've never even glanced at them!

6. The Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand

I know you're not supposed to judge a series by their covers, but check out how cool these look. Plus, I'd love to know what the hype is all about.

7. The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer

That Lunar Chronicles series is so hot right now. No, but really... I feel so left out since I haven't read either of these, or the next two, Cress and Winter. Love these not-so-classic retellings.

8. The Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi

Another somewhat controversial pick, people seem to uniformly love Shatter Me although theres some difference in opinion on the last one, and wherever there are differences I like to make up my own mind.

9. The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo

This series sounds like it has an incredibly detailed and believable fantasy world. It reminds me a little of Harry Potter, not because of the plot but because of the uniqueness and depth of the world it's set in. I'm looking forward to seeing if people are right about that.

10. The Graceling Realm series by Kristin Cashore

Of all the series I've seen online, I don't think I've ever seen a bad word written about this one. I actually have been putting off starting it because I'm a little afraid I might fall in love with it as well.

Those are my picks! What are yours?

  1. Nope, I've got the Stephanie Perkins trilogy on my list, too. You're not the only one. ;)

We also share the Lunar Chronicles. And I love fantasy, so maybe I should give Bardugo's Grisha series a try!

  2. You've got some great series on here. 1, 3, 4, 6, & 10 are all really great! I read Anna and the French Kiss and I just didn't think it was as good as everyone made it out to be. It wasn't bad, just okay!

    Check out my TTT.

    1. I'm so excited that so many people like so many of these, and that takes some of the pressure off of reading it!

  3. Oh my gosh, you should read Cinder and Scarlet as soon as possible. Those books are amazing. Oh, and so are Anna and Lola.

I still need to read Shadow and Bone, Graceling and Daughter of Smoke and Bone, too! So many books, so little time :)

    1. I know, right? The problem with series too is that they take even longer. It's so hard when you want them to last forever AND don't have enough time!

  4. I forgot all about the Uglies series! I have a few of those books sitting on my shelves... but I've never actually read them.

I've just recently started Shadow and Bone and so far I have to say I'm enjoying it and would likely recommend it for others to read. I hope you get the chance to read these series in the near future!

    1. I've had them sitting on my shelf for a while too! At first the concept kind of turned me off but now I'm curious!

  5. Great list! I loved Unearthly and Shatter Me! And I just got Anna and the French Kiss from the library so I can't wait to start that. Lunar Chronicles was also on my list.

  6. I was super-late to Stephanie Perkins as well, but her books are definitely worth the wait! Daughter of Smoke and Bone features gorgeous writing, and Unearthly has a love triangle that is actually awesome, so I hope you get to these, as well as the others on your list, very soon.

    1. There's nothing I love more than a series that has a great plot AND great writing, and love triangles are always exciting :)

  7. I've been wanting to read the 'Shiver' series, too. I read 'The Scorpio Races' and LOVED Stiefvater's writing.

I'd forgotten about the Uglies series. I've read Uglies and Pretties, but never picked up the last two books in the series (I probably won't, either... shame on me! But neither story was cliff-hangerish enough for me to feel like I had to read the next).

Shadow and Bone rocked my socks. I can't wait for the next one!

And, I might be alone on this, but I did NOT like Graceling. The premise was pretty interesting, but the MC, Katsa, got on my nerves. I've been meaning to pick up Bitterblue to see if I'd enjoy that world better through a different MC's point of view.

There's so many series out right now, it's hard to catch up! We need to retire so we can read full-time.

    1. It's actually really nice to know that someone didn't like Graceling, it kind of takes the pressure off - I can't tell you how many times I felt so weird because I was on the opposite site of popular opinion. I would LOVE to be able to read full time!

  8. I didn't put the Wolves of Mercy on my list since it was sooo long already, but I actually have all three and do want to read them. I read a pretty hilarious review over on Real Men Read YA recently -- there are actually some slight spoilers, but in this case it didn't really bother me -- I'm going to have to read these books eventually, if only to decide for myself if I like them or not!

And thanks for commenting on my list -- I'm really excited to read the All Souls Trilogy, I really don't know why I keep dragging my feet about starting them!

    2. You're welcome! He also did an incredibly awesome post about the book Something Like Normal the other day and then had a rap battle with the author Trish Doller in the comments -- it's one of my new favorite blogs & I can't help recommending whenever I can!

  9. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how awesome Stephanie Perkins' books are-I bet a thousand people have told you already (but seriously, read them, they're awesome!) :D

I read Shiver and only thought it was okay. I wasn't sure I wanted to continue with the series but a few people have told me that the second book is different enough that I should like it more, so I guess I'll give it a try. Plus, I love that the text is in different colors.

    1. I've been putting off Shiver a little because of the cover and because some people seem mediocre on it, but I have it on my Nook and really should knock it out.

  10. I have yet to read the Stephanie Perkins trilogy too. And Grisha.
